Joanna White, 31, from Sompting, was eating a McDonald’s on a bench next to the site where workers were digging as part of the high street regeneration scheme.
She said: “As the tree came down, I ducked and it hit me in the back of the neck.

“I feel okay, but I am still shaken up over what happened. It was pretty terrifying.”
The tree that snapped was part of a larger body being cut down today.
It was surveyed by Adur and Worthing Councils, and was found to be rotting near the base.

“The tree can look fine from the outside, but unfortunately cold temperatures and damp can make it start to rot. Unfortunately we have to take the whole thing down to avoid an incident.”
Alexander and Liverpool Terrace was closed temporarily while the operation was carried out, and the tree has now been sawn down.
