PC Liz Daddy of Sussex Police’s Road Policing Unit said: “We are keen to find out how the ladder ended up in the carriageway. It is thought the ladder came from a dark coloured van as it was driving north on the A23 at Handcross Hill at around 7.20am.
“We would like to hear from anyone who saw the ladder come from the van, or has information about the driver or number plate and anyone who witnessed the subsequent collision.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 203 of 19/6.
