‘Suspected mortar’ found at Gatwick Airport car park
The bomb disposal team was called to Gatwick Airport after a sniffer dog identified a suspected mortar in a car park in the early hours of the morning.
Police said safety cordons were put in place at the scene.
An x-ray of the item showed it ‘not to be live’, Gatwick Police said in a statement on Twitter.
The bomb disposal team removed the item.
Gatwick Police said: “D Section - whilst on patrol a Dog Unit identified a suspected mortar in a car park on the perimeter of the airport at 0330hrs.
“Safety cordons were put in place whilst EOD attended. An x-ray showed it not to be live.
“EOD removed the item. The airport remains open.”
