Last week marked the UK’s annual celebration of the invaluable difference that volunteers make.
From walking four-legged friends to cleaning kennels, volunteers such as Simon Roles from Worthing have given in excess of 475 hours donated to the charity.

Simon is on hand to help the charity mostly with maintenance and gardening but his tasks vary greatly – from weeding to helping out reception.
Chris Barnard, volunteer coordinator at Dogs Trust Shoreham, said: “Volunteers are extremely important to us as a charity and we couldn’t care for as many dogs as we do without their help.
“We are always on the lookout for new recruits and really hope these exciting opportunities will appeal to a wide range of people.

“If you think you could spare some time to lend a hand, please get in touch.”
While Dogs Trust is always on the look out for volunteers at its rehoming centres, the Brighton Road charity is also encouraging local dog lovers to open their hearts and homes and to consider becoming a foster carer.
The ‘Home from Home’ scheme provides temporary care in the home setting for dogs that are finding kennel life particularly stressful.

Sarah Howard, Home from Home coordinator at Dogs Trust Shoreham, said: “Our Home from Home scheme is not only beneficial for dogs that find kennel life difficult, but it’s also a great solution for people who love having a dog around but don’t want the long-term commitment or financial burden. The initiative is incredibly rewarding for the foster carers – especially when you see a dog that you’ve cared for and rehabilitated go to a happy, loving home.
“We cover all fees for the dogs – including their bedding, food and vet costs. The duration of fostering can range from a short period of time to several months, although the average stay is three to four weeks.”
