Photos from the scene show several police cars at the seafront spot. A Sussex Police spokesman said officers responded to reports of a large group of youths gathered on Hove Lawns at around 6.37pm. Officers attended and a dispersal order was issued. The group left and police maintained a presence in the area late into the evening. No arrests were made. The lawns were left strewn with rubbish after the group left the area. Witness Simon Worrall tweeted: “Place looked like a tornado had hit. Tons of rubbish. Like the aftermath of a mass flytip.” Councillor Chris Henry said the incident showed that solutions for young people were ‘badly needed’ amid the coronavirus crisis. He said in a tweet: “We need post Covid economic solutions, but let’s not leave our young people behind. Bored and missing their friends, how do we ensure safety and activities for young adults? Hove Lawns tonight shows how badly solutions are needed.”
