The Royal Logistics Corps, Birling Gap Coastguards, and Eastbourne Coastguards were at the scene to deal with the Second World War bomb, which was detonated at about 8.15am by the army.
An army spokesperson said the shell was washed up ashore and the situation has been dealt with by their explosive ordnance troop.

Hide AdA HM Coastguard spokesperson said, “The Royal Logistic Corps carried out this controlled explosion this morning, just west of Belle Tout Lighthouse. If you find anything of concern or in a coastal emergency dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
A Birling Gap Coastguard spokesperson said the bomb is believed to be an ‘armour-piercing shell’ and is approximately two feet in length, which is ‘much larger’ than what they have dealt with before.
