Lewes residents rally to replace £1,000 stolen from 89-year-old man

Sussex Police confirmed last week that it was hunting for two men who pinched the cash from the man’s house in Queens Road, Lewes, after claiming to be from the council.
The pair said that they were there to treat damp and entered the property to look around – before making off with the money.

Hide AdResidents were quick to express their shock and dismay at the theft on social media.
The Express’ story on Facebook was shared by 1,700 people in a bid to help catch the culprits.
Soon after, Lewesians rallied to replace the stolen funds – clearly showing that the community spirit remains high.
A gofundpage page was set up by Mick Symes, administrator of Lewes Present Facebook group.

Hide AdIt read: “This appeal is to raise £1,000 to restore the elderly gentleman who was mercilessly robbed by conmen in his own home to his original financial situation.”
The fundraising page exceeded its target of £1,000 in just a few days.
Mr Symes confirmed this week he was just waiting for the funds to be transferred and then they will be given to the man as soon as possible.
He added: “Crimes against the elderly are as cowardly as they are callous.
“As admin of Lewes Present Facebook group my thanks and gratitude goes out to all who contributed towards the appeal.”
