Worthing Borough Council U-turn on refuse collections changes should be a matter of urgency

As a small business owner, I fully appreciate the concept of budgeting and how you must strive to balance the books whenever possible.
But scrapping weekly refuse collections is a false economy on a grand scale.

Hide AdGranted, it wouldn’t be such a bad idea if every household was issued with larger black and blue recycling bins, but that’s financially unlikely, given the cost, so the changes will ultimately throw up public health concerns.
Pardon the pun, but this line being trotted out about increased recycling is rubbish.
Having to wait 14 days instead of the current seven to have our refuse bins emptied will throw up serious issues.

Hide AdMost of the average household wheelie bins will become full long before the two weeks are up, so then residents will have to return to days gone by and put out the good old fashioned black bags to accompany the existing bins.
Cue the return of the urban fox problems, not to mention the seagulls and the possibility of the extra waste attracting rats.
Recycling is important but I don’t believe this move is about environmental progress – it’s good old fashioned cost cutting and it could end up having a serious knock-on effect on the people of Worthing.
Mrs Thatcher famously said U-turns weren’t for her. A Worthing Borough Council U-turn on this now approved proposal should be a matter of urgency.
