New vote system needed
As Comment (Herald, May 8) put it, even the Stop Durrington's over Development '“ Save Titnore's Trees! Party beat the BNP by only a few votes.
So what can be done to encourage people to vote?
Clearly, brutally ejecting people from observing counting of the votes won't help.

Let's get rid of the first-past-the-post system.
Nothing puts people off more than knowing their minority views have no hope of being represented.
Then let's make the whole system more efficient '“ and cheaper '“ to run.
Surely, in this age of instant communication, the paper-based ballot can be replaced by a push button pad, making it possible for results to be announced minutes after the polling stations close?
One last thought.
