The eastern English Channel is nationally important for shark and ray species including some of the UK's most impressive predatory marine fish including tope and blonde ray. David Harvey, marine biologist and chairman of the authority said: " Many species are now seriously depleted or absent and are particularly sucscptible to over fishing because they grow slowly, mature late and produce few eggs or young."
