Mr Bell, who has lived in the village since 1949, has agreed to become patron of the Pagham Flood Defence Trust.
In comments published on the Save Pagham Beach and Village website, Mr Bell said: “Right now, with the terrifying thought of the sea breaking through our beaches it’s time we did our utmost to expedite action.

British racing driver Mr Bell enjoyed a hugely successful career in the 1970s, which saw him win the Le Mans 24 hours five times.
As reported last week, a planning application has been submitted for a project in the region of £800,000 which campaigners believe will reverse significant coastal erosion.
